The team met Meire in Toulouse, where he had been living some years prior to their visit, being a member of the so called local “Old Guard” – meaning, kindred who had lived in the city during the reign of the previous Queen of Love, Esclarmonde la Noir, and decided to stay when Isouda took over the city from her defeated rival around 1225.
At the time of their visit Meire was already, out of all his former compatriots, the most ingrained into the new court and had enough of the Queen’s favour to be chosen as a guide for the newly arrived guests. At the time he owned a fashionable establishment of questionable repute, but unquestionable quality, in the merchant quarter of the city, where he led and offered his hospitality to Bianca and Marcus, offering to serve as a guide and information source during the coterie’s stay in Toulouse, in accordance with the Queen’s wishes. The team decided to not depend on his services, however, Marcus has kept in contact with Meire ever since, exchanging pleasantries, information and trade tips throughout the ages.
At the time of the Great Market in Vienna, in August 1449, Meire wrote Marcus to apologise for being unable to arrive in the city personally because of an urgent and rather sudden summons to his homeland, arranging for some of his clanmates to be present instead.
